5 Common Home Decorating Mistakes You Should Avoid

Hey! First let's talk about home decoration. Don't we all wish our homes to look great? A place that's comfortable and in our style, maybe even getting one or two compliments from friends when they come over. But the thing is — decorating your abode isn't always as easy as it looks on Pinterest.

At a time it’s easy to stand in a store, look around and beautiful vase... Then you start asking yourself, “Where would I use that?” Over time, I’ve come to realize that there are three types of regular mistakes in decorating which turn your space all wrong. But don’t worry! I’m here to point out these pitfalls so you can avoid them and truly love your home.

Ignoring Scale and Proportion

This is a big one (pun intended). How many times have we walked into a room where the furniture feels too small or way too large? It’s all out of proportion.

For instance, I once bought this fantastic coffee table for the living room. Sleek and modern it was, but when it arrived home--compared with my big couch--it looked like a dollhouse piece. Lesson learned: Always measure out your spaces, and make sure that whatever furniture you buy fits in them.

Pro Tip: Before buying furniture, use painter’s tape to outline furniture dimensions on your floor. It’s fast and easy way to see how a piece will look in your space.2. Too Much Clutter

We’ve all been guilty of this one. It’s easy to overdo the decor, especially when any object you pick up is darn cute! But too much clutter can make a room feel chaotic and overwhelming.

When I first decorated my bedroom, it looked like a chamber of horrors. Each horizontal surface swayed and sunk beneath an ocean of trinkets, little pictures, plastic animals or flower pots. Overdone home decoration looks less like a place to relax than a hawker's stall. Once I cleared the clutter and stuck to just a few choice items, the space felt much calmer, more inviting.

Pro Tip: Less is More. Change out decor seasonally so you continually see new things, without cluttering your home.

Forgetting to LightLiterally.Too many spaces make do with just a harsh main light. As Frances Brennan points out, good lighting is magic that can transform a room.

In my eating space, I used to have an ancient ceiling light. It threw out a harsh, unappealing light. Not to mention, it also left darkened patches in the room. I replaced it with a modern pendant light and added an adjustable switch—which made all the difference. Now it seems to glow warmly and gracefully, just right for dinner parties or snuggling down on a winter's night.Pro Tip: Layer lighting. Overhead lights, floor lamps, table lamps and even string lights all contribute to creating a soft haze.

Not Testing Out Paint. When you've painted a room, not uncommonly its only then that you notice—hard as it might be to believe— just how unlike the colour is from what was in your head. Not to mention the fact that the light changes so much through the time of day, and at night the room itself exerts quite a different influence.

I once painted my living room a shade of blue that looked wonderful on the chip but much too bright when it got onto the walls. In the end I had to get all new paint, which was a real pain. Now I always test the paint first in a small area.Pro Tip: Paint a few test patches on your walls, then look at them in different lighting.

Pushing All Furniture Against the Walls This one is a temptation, especially in smaller rooms. You might think that by putting all the furniture against one wall, the room gets larger; in fact, it just feels cramped and tiny. It often leaves the space feeling cold and disjointed. Back in my living room I used to have everything up against walls, and so it felt more like sitting in the waiting room than being in a cozy cool little spot. I changed the arrangement of the furniture to create a conversation area by bringing the couch and chairs closer together. Now it feels warm and inviting. Pro Tip: Don't shy away from floating your furniture in the middle of the room. Use a rug to anchor the area and pull everything together. Wrapping It Up Doing up your home is such a personal and satisfying process, but there are lots of pitfalls on the road. But by keeping scale, clutter, lighting, paint colors, and furniture placement in mind as you work out your room layout: you can create a space that looks good and feels real. What do you think? Ready to tackle your next decorating project? Remember, it's all about experimenting and finding what works best for you. And hey, if you've made any of these mistakes previously, so what? We've all been there before! Let me know what you're doing to transform your space. I'd love to hear your suggestions and see pictures of the before-and-after!
