A Guide to Choosing Statement Lamps for a Cozy Living Room
Initial conditions: first, consider the entire living room. Does it look modern and straight? Bohemian and whimsical in your life? Or is it that comfortable farmhouse charm? No matter what, the lamp has to work with how your setting turns out.
When I renovated my living room a year ago, everything I bought fell into the mid-century modern category (but not enough to become cliché). I managed to pick up a tripod lamp with wooden legs and a plain drum shade, though. It just tied the whole room togetheroff. However, if you feel drawn to something a little softer, fabric shades and warm-glowing bulbs are just the thing for this winter look you're going after!
Lamp Function-ality
Okay, let’s be practical for a moment. What are you going to need this lamp for? When it’s meant to be next to your favorite reading chair, task lighting is the order of the day. On the other hand, if the aim is simply to set mood just right, a lamp with adjustable light levels makes total sense.
I have this floor lamp in the corner of my living room that exists just for the sake of atmosphere. It's got a warm-toned bulb and frosted glass on top, making it perfect for those nights when you want only a little light during your movie escapade, but don't want to wreck the mood. It's best avoided if possible.
Size—Does
This is a big one. On the one hand, you don’t want the lamp to dominate the space and be too big for everything around it. On the other hand, you also don't want your lamp to get lost in the shuffle either. When it comes to table lamps, a good rule of thumb is that they should be about one-and-a-half times the height of the table they're sitting on, while floor lamps need to be tall enough that you can get light without getting it in your eyes. When I bought that oversized arc lamp for an apartment that was too small, the mistake was just overwhelming. It looked fine at the store--but in my microcosmic living room? It was like having a giraffe in the corner. I’ve now therefore figured out that one should always measure up the place one intends to use for an object before doing anything else with it.
Add Texture and Materials
Art lamps offer an easy way to introduce texture or contrast into your living room. At one end of the spectrum are ceramic bases with intricate patterns that have been traditionally handmade, and then at a completely different extreme lies metallic finishes. Also consider: lamps fashioned of natural materials– rattan or wood for example. One of my favorite discoveries is a ceramic lamp with a mottled glaze. It added just the right touch of character to a room which was all neutral-toned and pale. And don't get me started on how much a brass lamp can shine out when faced with dark walls!
Do Remember the Bulb
The choice of bulb can make or mar your lamp’s look and ambiance. Warm LEDs are ideal for creating that cosy environment we all want. If your lamp shade is sheer, try an Edison bulb: they must be able to add bit vintage charm into your room.
Mix and Match
Why does every lamps have to match? If you mix and match however it can add considerable visual interest to your living room. For example, try a metal lamp for the floor and something more traditional in a table lamp; so long as they share one thing in common like color or material, then unity is achieved.
In particular, my living room is furnished with a black metal floor lamp and an earthenware table lamp. The two are completely different in style but with the matching warm brass fittings, something extraordinary happens to make them blend together effortlessly.
Placement Is Key
Where you put a lamp is just as important as what kind you choose. A good rule of thumb is to aim for different layers of light. A room will feel more inviting the more that basically overhead lights, floor lamps and table lamps are combined.
So now near my couch I've got a floor lamp, on top of the side table beside white linen suitably draped over the square top for a northern European feel and just over to that a small light to put on after you get up from reading ballads with words so small they seem ridiculous. Living here is like living in a comfortable home, but also having your own private asylum.8. Consider a DIY Touch
If you're on a budget or simply enjoy getting your hands dirty, consider giving an old lamp new life. Change the shade, paint the base, or wind some rope around it for a beachy feel.
One of my favorite projects was spray-painting a thrifted lamp base gold and pairing it with a bold patterned shade. In this way, it cost me less than $20, and it’s now one of the standout pieces in my living room.
